An unnamed buttress natural arch, Apache County, Arizona
Photos by Jay Wilbur
NABSQNO 12S-653098-4054469. This unnamed arch is a young buttress natural arch eroded through a projecting wall of Wingate sandstone. It is considered young because the lintel shows considerable excess rock, i.e., rock that does not redistribute weight.
This arch is located above Hasbidito Creek, in a very remote area of the Navajo Nation. The services of a guide must be obtained to visit it. Because the area has spiritual significance, permission may not always be granted. The arch has a span of about 65 feet and a height of about 120 feet. Vreeland listed this arch in his catalog as number 11-4.
