Zuni Arch in Cibola County,
New Mexico Photo by Jay Wilbur
NABSQNO 13S-240317-3868146. Zuni Arch is a pothole natural arch eroded through Zuni sandstone. Because the arch is rather old, it would be easy to classify it as a cave natural arch. Nevertheless, a distinct pothole is found behind the arch. Vreeland reports a span of 34 feet for this arch. It appears as number 17-17 in his catalog.
Zuni Arch is a somewhat inappropriate name for the arch since it is on the Acoma Reservation. Perhaps the name refers to the geological formation. The services of an Acoma guide must be obtained before directly accessing the arch. However it is easily viewed and photographed from State Highway 117 without a guide or the requirement of a fee. Do not cross the fence below the arch, however. MAP
