NABSQNO 13S-389765-3981765Popawi in Rio Arriba County, New Mexico Photo by Jay Wilbur NABSQNO 13S-389765-3981765. Popawi is a caprock natural arch eroded through volcanic tuff. It is located on the Santa Clara Pueblo and is part of the Puye Cliff Dwellings, Rio Arriba County, New Mexico. Although it is part of a National Historic Landmark, access is currently not possible because the Santa Clara Pueblo has closed the area, once a park, to all visitors. The area was closed as a result of the Cerro Grande fire in 2000. It is unclear why it has not been reopened. The photo above was taken several years before the closure. Vreeland included Popawi in his catalog as number 17-23, and reported a span of 3 feet and a height of 9 feet.
